This monumental wedding suzani originates from the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan and dates to 1970–1985. Measuring 84 inches by 111 inches (213 cm x 282 cm), this substantial textile is in superb condition. It features a combination of hand and machine embroidery meticulously worked onto a deep black velvety backdrop, which provides a luxurious, light-absorbing ground for the vibrant motifs.
The central composition is anchored by a large floral roundel containing a mirrored pair of songbirds perched amidst blue and pink blossoms, a traditional Uzbek symbol of matrimonial harmony and love. This central medallion is framed by a series of concentric floral borders and a wide field filled with large, stylized pink lilies and yellow carnations. The use of varying stitch directions and a celebratory palette of pastels—including mint green, rose, and sky blue—creates a sense of depth and organic vitality across the expansive dark field.
