This fine ikat hinggi, originating from Sumba, Indonesia, dates to the late 19th or early 20th century (1875–1910). It is a traditional men's shoulder or hip cloth, masterfully crafted from handspun cotton with an exceptional level of fineness. The textile features a complex, multi-banded composition typical of East Sumba, showcasing traditional motifs in a sophisticated palette of deep indigo, earthy kombu (rust-red), and cream.
The design includes mirrored horizontal registers of stylized anthropomorphic figures, geometric diamonds, and zoomorphic shapes, including what appear to be fish or birds in the transitional bands. Measuring 46 inches by 102 inches (117 cm x 259 cm), the piece retains a significant 10-inch fringe at one end, though some fringing is missing as seen in the documentation. It is in good condition overall, bearing authentic signs of age and use, including a few small holes and a 3-inch tear.
