This elegant silk shawl, originating from Sumatra, Indonesia, dates to the late 19th century (1880–1900). The textile is a masterwork of traditional Indonesian resist-dyeing, utilizing both plangi (tie-dyeing) and tritek (stitch-resist) techniques to create its intricate patterns.
The shawl features a deep madder-red ground densely populated with small, geometric diamond and floral motifs in shades of ochre and cream. The composition is anchored at both ends by a horizontal band of large, stylized tumpal or paisley-like motifs, enclosed within decorative borders. Measuring 84 inches by 33 inches (213 cm x 84 cm), the shawl is in very good condition, preserving the clarity of its complex resist-dyed designs and the supple drape of the silk.
