This striking nobori bata (banner flag) from Japan dates to the early Showa period (1926–1940). Measuring 20 inches by 27 inches (51 cm x 69 cm), it served as a traditional store sign for kaki-goori (shaved ice), a popular seasonal treat. The banner features a bold, large-scale red character for koori (ice) set against a cream cotton ground.
The graphic design is quintessentially Showa-era, utilizing high-contrast colors and dynamic movement. Below the central character, deep indigo and cerulean blue waves crest with white foam, while a small blue bird hovers to the right, adding a playful, cooling aesthetic to the advertisement. The piece is in excellent condition, retaining its vibrant, saturated pigments.
