This fine chirimen (silk crepe) fukusa, dating to the late Edo period (1840–1868), is a beautiful example of layered symbolic storytelling. Measuring approximately 25 inches by 27 inches (64 cm x 71 cm), the textile features a sophisticated composition of overlapping fan (sensu) and rectangular screen (shikishi) shapes.
The primary fan-shaped motif contains a delicate ink-style landscape featuring a crane in flight above a rugged coastline with pine trees, both powerful emblems of longevity. Behind it, a rectangular panel depicts a mountain vista with a minogame (long-tailed tortoise), further emphasizing a wish for a long and prosperous life. These central vistas are framed by vibrant, hand-painted floral sprays of cherry blossoms and citrus fruits, likely representing the seasons of spring and winter. The piece is finished with a striking beni-red silk lining and original corner tassels, all of which remain in very good condition.
