This striking shibori cotton noren (traditional Japanese shop or room divider) dates to the late 20th century. Measuring approximately 26 inches by 52 inches (66 cm x 132 cm), the curtain consists of two vertical panels of deep indigo cotton joined at the top. The textile is in excellent condition.
The design is a sophisticated example of manual resist-dyeing, featuring flowing, organic paths and botanical motifs created through the shibori technique. Creamy white "feathered" lines wind across the indigo field, reminiscent of streams or mist, while the lower sections are densely populated with stylized floral clusters and soaring butterflies. The composition utilizes various shibori methods, including kanoko (dapple) and kumo (spiderweb) patterns, to create a sense of movement and natural variation.
