This noren (traditional split-room divider) from Japan dates to the late 20th century. Measuring approximately 26 inches by 52 inches (66 cm x 132 cm), the textile is crafted from a substantial navy-blue cotton and is in excellent condition.
The divider features a bold, asymmetric composition created through the shibori (resist-dyeing) technique. Large, stylized peony blossoms—symbols of bravery and honor—are rendered in crisp white against the dark ground, accompanied by jagged leaves and vertical "rain" or "stream" lines. The corners are anchored by geometric shippo (seven treasures) patterns, representing infinite harmony and expansion. The characteristic "blurred" edges and fine textured details within the blossoms showcase the mastery of hand-tied resist dyeing common in high-quality Japanese cotton textiles.
