This cotton warp-ikat selendang (shouldercloth), originating from the island of Savu (Sawu), Indonesia, dates to the first quarter of the 20th century (1900–1925). Attributed to the "greater Blossom clan" (Hubi Ae), this specific textile is a documented example of the island's renowned weaving excellence. Measuring 40 inches by 63 inches (101 cm x 160 cm), the cloth possesses a luxurious, even handle.
The design is organized into vertical bands featuring traditional Savunese geometric and floral motifs rendered in indigo and natural dyes of red, pink, and rust against a dark ground. A significant historical detail is a woven sequence of numbers resembling "1328", likely referencing the Hijri (Islamic) calendar, which corresponds to the Gregorian year 1910. This date aligns with the period shortly after Savu began increasing its contact with the outside world. The selendang is in excellent condition, with the exception of one small 1cm hole near one end.
