This elegant silk fukusa (gift-presenting cloth) from Japan dates to the Taisho period (1912–1926). Measuring 19 inches by 22 inches (48 cm x 56 cm), the textile is crafted from a fine, monochromatic ro (gauze) silk, a weave characterized by its horizontal stripes and semi-transparent quality traditionally favored for summer use.
The artwork features a serene, hand-painted landscape rendered using the yuzen technique. The composition depicts a misty mountain scene in an ink-wash style, with a dense cluster of pine trees growing among rocky outcroppings along a winding stream. In the mid-ground, a traditional Japanese building with a thatched roof is partially obscured by the foliage, while a large, pale mountain peak rises into the hazy grey sky. The piece is in very good condition and is complete with its four original gold-toned silk corner tassels.
