This printed cotton furoshiki (traditional wrapping cloth) from Japan dates to the late 20th century, approximately 1975–2000. Measuring approximately 41 inches by 41 inches (104 cm x 104 cm), the textile is in excellent condition.
The cloth features a bold, graphic composition centered on a majestic pine tree (matsu), a venerable symbol of longevity, steadfastness, and the New Year. The pine is depicted with stylised, cloud-like needle clusters in shades of blue and white, accented with small, vibrant red plum blossoms (ume) and bamboo leaves at the base. This combination of pine, bamboo, and plum is known as the "Three Friends of Winter" (Sho Chiku Bai), representing resilience and auspiciousness. The tree is anchored to a rocky shore amidst dynamic, swirling waves rendered in a contemporary aesthetic against a deep navy blue ground.
