This exquisite Peranakan Chinese batik sarong originates from Pekalongan, Java, dating between 1930 and 1950. Crafted by the workshop of Tan Ping Hian, it bears a hand-drawn signature along with a period-typical Indonesian injunction against design replication. The sarong features a captivating buketan (bouquet) design dominated by vibrant azure blue and true red carnation blossoms. These floral arrangements are set against a rich, caramel-colored background intricately detailed with Chinese banji (swastika fretwork) and coiled leafy tendrils that provide significant depth.
The composition utilizes color to create sophisticated 3-dimensional effects; ochre blossoms act as shadows, while white flowers in the kepala (head panel) simulate falling light. The foliage is equally detailed, with red leaves rendered in deep and pale shades and greens exhibiting stunning tonal variations. Multicolored butterflies and delicate garlands in the borders complete the vivacious scene. Measuring 41 inches by 40 inches (104 cm x 102 cm), the sarong is made of premium, heavy-weight cotton that is fine, smooth, and crisp to the touch. It remains in excellent condition with rich, saturated colors.
