This striking silk fukusa (gift cover), dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912), features one of Japan’s most iconic auspicious pairings: the crane and the rising sun. Measuring 26 inches by 30 inches (66 cm x 76 cm), the textile is rendered on a high-quality cream silk ground that has taken on a warm, antique patina.

The central composition is a masterful blend of media:

• The Sun and Sea: A large, soft-edged red sun dominates the center, while turbulent grey and white waves crash against a jagged rock in the foreground, all skillfully hand-painted.
• The Cranes: A majestic lead crane with a red crown is depicted in mid-flight, its wings spread wide to reveal detailed silk embroidery that adds texture and life to its plumage. Two smaller cranes follow in the distance, painted with fluid, minimalist strokes.
• The Landscape: A steep cliffside with delicate bamboo leaves frames the left side of the scene, providing a sense of vertical scale and natural harmony.

The piece is in very good condition, though it shows slight smudging consistent with its age and is missing one of its original purple corner tassels.
