This masterful needlepoint panel, originating from England during the last quarter of the 19th century (1875–1900), is a fine Victorian homage to medieval artistry. Measuring 40 inches by 24 inches (102 cm x 61 cm), the piece is rendered in a dense wool ground with central figures meticulously worked in petit-point. The composition is directly inspired by the famous "The Lady and the Unicorn" tapestry series held at the Musée de Cluny, specifically the "Hearing" (L'Ouïe) panel.
The scene depicts a noblewoman playing a portable organ placed atop a table covered in a rich fabric. She is assisted by a smaller female figure, while a lion and a unicorn stand as heraldic sentinels on either side, holding tall banners. The entire scene is set upon a dark green millefleur (thousand flowers) island, surrounded by a vibrant terracotta field filled with various animals—including a cheetah, a rabbit, and a fox—amidst a delicate array of botanical sprigs. The panel retains its original decorative border and remains in excellent condition.
