This charming miniature cotton kimono from Japan dates to the Taisho period (1912–1926). Measuring 17 inches in both width and height (43 cm x 43 cm), this small-scale garment was likely created as a display piece, a high-quality doll's kimono, or a master tailor's sample. The textile is in very good condition.
The kimono features a bold, navy-blue ground adorned with a dynamic and colorful botanical pattern characteristic of the Taisho era’s "romantic" aesthetic. Large, expressive paulownia or hollyhock-style leaves in shades of dusty rose, sage green, and autumnal brown are interspersed with clusters of small, pale-purple chrysanthemums. The composition utilizes oversized graphics that wrap around the sleeves and body, creating a sense of fluid movement. A soft pink lining peeks out from the hem and sleeve openings, providing a delicate contrast to the saturated outer cotton.
