This Miao textile hails from the Guizhou province of China and dates to the late 19th to early 20th century (1875–1925). Measuring 16 inches by 15 inches (41 cm x 38 cm), the piece is in good condition, displaying some surface abrasion consistent with its considerable age. The panel is a masterwork of mixed-media construction, featuring dense silk and metal thread embroidery on a luxurious ground of silk and black velvet.
The composition is dominated by a large, scalloped mandala medallion that seems to radiate from a central octagonal star. Within the layers of the medallion, four stylized dragons or mythical creatures are rendered in shimmering silver-toned metal threads, their forms intertwined with scrolling clouds. Below the central medallion, a V-shaped register features two symmetrical panels filled with additional mythical beasts and wave motifs. The entire piece is enclosed by a multi-layered border of geometric brocade and a final outer frame of teal silk piping, showcasing the complex, architectural assembly style of historical Miao ceremonial dress.
