This Miao textile panel originates from the Guizhou province of China and dates to the first half of the 20th century (1900–1950). Measuring 25 inches by 21 inches (64 cm x 53 cm), the piece is in very good condition and showcases the legendary needlework of the Miao ethnic group. The composition is expertly hand-embroidered onto a dark silk and cotton ground, providing a sturdy yet refined base for the dense ornamentation.
The panel features a complex, non-linear geometric layout characteristic of Miao ceremonial clothing or baby carriers. The upper section is composed of interconnected rectangular and L-shaped cells, each filled with vibrant spiral and sunburst motifs in shades of ochre, cream, and deep purple. Below this, a large rectangular field displays a rhythmic arrangement of stylized floral medallions interconnected by sweeping, curvilinear vines. The use of fine satin and chain stitches creates a highly textured surface, with one lower section bordered by a thin, bright green silk trim that adds a sharp contemporary accent to the earthy palette.
