This Miao textile originates from the Guizhou province of China and dates to the first half of the 20th century (1900–1950). Measuring 23 inches by 18 inches (58 cm x 46 cm), the piece is in excellent condition and represents the high-level artistry of Miao silk-on-silk embroidery. The intricate designs are hand-stitched onto a deep black silk ground, which provides a stark, dramatic contrast for the vibrant threadwork.
The composition is divided into several distinct geometric zones, a common feature in Miao ceremonial embroidery. The upper section features a central yellow square containing four stylized, interlocking paisley or bird-like motifs, surrounded by a green border filled with scrolling red vines and black "comma" accents. The lower section continues this green-and-red vine motif, framing two smaller yellow squares that contain swirled cruciform patterns. The meticulous use of chain and satin stitches creates a dense, rhythmic texture that characterizes the unique visual language of the ethnic minority groups in Southwest China.
