This Miao textile panel originates from the Guizhou province of China and dates to the first half of the 20th century (1900–1950). Measuring 23 inches by 18 inches (58 cm x 46 cm), the piece is in excellent condition and represents the high-level artistry of Miao silk-on-silk embroidery. The complex designs are hand-stitched onto a deep black silk ground, which provides a stark, dramatic contrast for the vibrant threadwork.
The composition is divided into several distinct geometric zones, a characteristic feature of Miao ceremonial embroidery used for garments or baby carriers. The upper section features a central green square populated by spiraling vine and floral motifs in red and pink, surrounded by a cream-colored border of scrolling acanthus-like leaves. The lower section continues this sophisticated interplay of color and form, featuring two smaller green squares with swirled cruciform patterns interspersed with cream-colored horizontal bands of stylized floral quatrefoils. The meticulous use of fine chain and satin stitches creates a dense, rhythmic texture that is a hallmark of Guizhou's ethnic minority textile traditions.
