This Miao textile panel originates from the Guizhou province of China and dates to the first half of the 20th century (1900–1950). Measuring 18 inches by 14 inches (46 cm x 36 cm), the piece is in excellent condition and exemplifies the sophisticated needlework of the Miao people. The intricate designs are hand-embroidered using fine silk thread on a high-quality black cotton base, a combination that allows the vibrant cool-toned pigments to stand out.
The composition follows a traditional, symmetrical layout characteristic of ceremonial decorative panels. The central black field is populated by five lozenge-shaped floral medallions, each meticulously stitched with blue and white silk threads and surrounded by a fine radiating "fringe" effect. This interior field is enclosed by a complex geometric border featuring stylized interlocking patterns in lavender, teal, and violet. The four corners of the panel are anchored by large square blocks containing dense, cross-shaped geometric embroidery, providing a strong architectural frame to the central botanical motifs.
