This Miao textile panel originates from the Guizhou province of China and dates to the first half of the 20th century (1900–1950). Measuring 18 inches by 16 inches (46 cm x 41 cm), the piece is in very good condition, though it exhibits a small area of color loss consistent with its age and use. The construction utilizes fine silk embroidery on a durable ground of silk and black cotton; please note that the deeper, darker tones in the detail shots more accurately reflect the true palette than the primary gallery image.
The composition is centered around a large circular medallion, which is surrounded by eight smaller satellite roundels arranged in a radial pattern on a dark brownish-black field. Each roundel is intricately embroidered with shimmering, iridescent violet and blue silk threads, featuring stylized floral and abstract motifs that appear almost metallic. The panel is framed by a decorative border on the top and bottom, along with a wide green silk trim on the left and a triangular corner appliqué on the right, showcasing the eclectic and highly skilled assembly techniques of Miao artisans.
