This monumental textile panel, originating from China during the mid-19th century (1825–1875), is a vibrant example of Qing Dynasty decorative silk work. Measuring 38 inches by 71 inches (97 cm x 180 cm), the piece is centered on a brilliant safflower-orange damask ground. The composition features a dynamic arrangement of soaring phoenixes—symbols of grace and high virtue—interspersed with lush peony blossoms and auspicious floral sprays.
The panel showcases a sophisticated array of techniques, including silk embroidery and metallic thread couching, which adds a luminous texture to the avian and botanical forms. The central field is framed by a sage-green brocade border featuring a geometric repeating pattern, providing a cool-toned architectural surround to the warm orange field. Despite its grand scale and age, the textile is in excellent condition.
