This extraordinary Qing Dynasty silk panel, dating from 1650–1800, is a masterwork of kesi (slit tapestry) technique. Measuring 69 inches by 32 inches (175 cm x 81 cm), the textile is remarkably "paper-thin" and lightweight, estimated at only 4–6 ounces. The composition features a central, ornate vase on a high-footed stand, filled with blossoming flowers and surrounded by a lively array of butterflies and floral sprigs.
The intricate details are worked with fine silk and metallic threads against a dark, hand-woven background, resulting in a crisp, dry surface texture characteristic of high-quality early kesi. Despite its delicate nature, the panel is in very good condition. Minor signs of its great age include a few small tears at the extreme upper left edge, some loose threads, and several picked threads throughout the field.
