This distinctive decorative runner, originating from Italy during the first quarter of the 19th century (1800–1825), is a masterful example of late Empire-style textile production. Measuring 45 inches by 18 inches (114 cm x 46 cm), the piece is centered on a luminous cream silk ground adorned with two large, symmetrical floral sprays. These motifs, featuring tulips and scrolling foliage in shades of dusty rose and olive green, are woven with a combination of silk and velvet to create a luxurious, varied pile.
The runner is framed by an exceptionally complex border of interlocking circular medallions, each executed in a deep chocolate-brown velvet that provides a high-contrast architectural surround. The entire perimeter is finished with a delicate, tasseled metallic-thread trim that adds a final layer of texture. For structural integrity and longevity, the textile is lined with linen, which remains in excellent condition alongside the pristine face of the brocade.
