This cotton block-printed headcloth, originating from Indonesia circa 1930, is part of a historical textile collection assembled by the chemist Dr. Charles E. Mullin. Mullin, an expert in fabric dyes, gathered such regional garments during his extensive travels across Asia in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Measuring 36 inches by 36 inches (91 cm x 91 cm), the textile is a classic square format typical of Indonesian headwear.
The design features a deep navy-blue ground with a central, diamond-shaped tengahan in a contrasting rust-red hue, framed by a serrated black border. Each of the four corners is adorned with a stylized paisley motif (buta), intricately detailed with red, cream, and black floral patterns. The entire composition is enclosed by a narrow, sophisticated border of repeating geometric lozenges. The headcloth is in excellent condition.
