This Art Deco embroidery from France dates to circa 1920. Measuring 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter, this circular piece was originally crafted as a decorative pillow appliqué, designed to adorn high-end upholstered furniture such as a sofa or chair. The textile remains in excellent condition.
The design is a masterful example of early 20th-century European needlework, featuring a harmonious blend of organic and geometric forms. The outer ring is composed of a rhythmic floral wreath with eight blooming pink flowers, each meticulously outlined in red satin-stitch embroidery. These blossoms are interconnected by sweeping green acanthus-style leaves that spiral toward the center. At the heart of the composition is a stunning "spider-web" or sunburst openwork section (jours), where delicate fabric bridges radiate from a central eyelet. The base fabric is a fine, light-colored linen or cotton mesh that provides a delicate, semi-transparent backdrop for the vibrant embroidery.
