This monumental embroidered hanging, likely from Turkey and dating to the second half of the 19th century (1850–1900), is a virtuoso display of late Ottoman textile artistry. The piece is worked on a rich brown satin ground and features a symmetrical, lush composition of large exotic blooms, stylized pomegranates, and scale-patterned serpentine vines.
The technical execution is particularly impressive, combining exceptionally fine tambour embroidery (a delicate chain-stitch) with lavish couched metal thread. These metallic elements provide structural definition and a glittering contrast to the soft silks. Measuring 96 inches by 68 inches (244 cm x 173 cm), the hanging remains in very good condition. While its presence is striking, close inspection reveals numerous tiny "bald spots" where the embroidery layer has experienced slight wear over the last 150 years.
