This evocative textile panel, originating from England during the fourth quarter of the 19th century (1875–1900), is a quintessential example of Aesthetic Movement needlework. Measuring 23 inches by 33 inches (58 cm x 84 cm), the piece is crafted on a light sky blue cotton backdrop. The central composition features a serene marshland scene, starring a large heron and a smaller kingfisher perched on a branch, surrounded by water lilies and reeds.
The vibrant silk embroidery is executed primarily in straight stitching to define the plumage and shimmering water. Notably, the bull-rushes exhibit a unique raised dimensional style, adding a sculptural quality to the botanical elements. While the panel is in very good condition, there are light stains scattered across the ground. The edges, which were once folded for framing, show some slight tattering and original tack marks.
