This vibrant rayon panel from China dates to the second quarter of the 20th century (1925–1950). Measuring 31 inches by 33 inches (79 cm x 84 cm), the textile is in very good condition and represents a fascinating fusion of modern industrial materials and traditional decorative techniques.
The piece features a complex printed design on a shimmering cream-colored rayon ground. The composition is dominated by large, blooming chrysanthemums in shades of coral, deep indigo, and teal, surrounded by swirling green foliage. Interspersed throughout the floral field are various birds in flight, adding a sense of movement to the arrangement. To provide depth and texture, the printed subjects are enhanced with intricate embroidery quilting along their outlines. The central field is enclosed by a wide, dark indigo border featuring a repeating coral floral motif. For structural stability and a refined finish, the panel is backed with black rayon fabric.
