This exquisite silk and metal thread embroidery from China dates to the first half of the 20th century (1900–1950). Measuring 9 inches by 4.5 inches (23 cm x 11 cm), the textile itself remains in excellent condition, although the surrounding matte shows damage and appears to be a later addition. The artwork is meticulously hand-stitched onto a deep navy blue silk base, providing a regal background for the luminous metallic work.
The central composition features a highly detailed goldfish with a sweeping, ornate tail, rendered in shimmering gold-toned metal threads and subtle pink silk accents. The fish is depicted blowing bubbles among delicate, pine-like aquatic plants. In Chinese culture, the goldfish (jinyu) is a powerful symbol of abundance, wealth, and harmony. The scene is enclosed within a sophisticated Cartouche frame of scrolling ruyi-heads and foliate motifs, all executed in heavy couched metallic thread.
