This striking and unique textile runner, originating from China during the second half of the 19th century (1850–1900), is remarkable for its exceptional length and vivid color contrast. Measuring 68 inches by 15 inches (173 cm x 38 cm), the piece is centered on a vibrant golden yellow background cloth, a color historically associated with high status in Chinese culture.
The composition features a vertically oriented, symmetrical arrangement of paired birds and lush botanical motifs. Two pairs of birds—one in flight with teal plumage and another perched with deep indigo wings—are interspersed with oversized pomegranates (symbolizing fertility) and various floral sprigs. These designs are finely crafted using a satin stitch technique, which allows for smooth, lustrous color transitions in shades of crimson, azure, and forest green. The panel is backed by a plain cotton fabric for stability and is framed by a blue patterned border that appears to be a later addition to the main textile. It remains in excellent condition.
