This fine silk embroidery from China dates to the mid-20th century (1940–1970). Measuring 16 inches by 15 inches (41 cm x 38 cm), the textile is in excellent condition and showcases the enduring tradition of Chinese needlework into the mid-century era. The main pattern is meticulously hand-stitched onto a deep black silk ground, which is further supported by a secondary backing also crafted from fine silk.
The central composition is a vibrant "Flowers and Butterflies" motif, featuring a large, multi-layered red peony as the focal point, surrounded by cream and coral blossoms. Two highly detailed butterflies with orange and green wings flit among the flowers, accompanied by traditional Daoist or Buddhist symbols, including a flaming pearl and flowing silk ribbons. The embroidery is executed in a variety of techniques, including satin stitch for the petals and fine stem stitches for the foliage. This central scene is framed by multiple borders: a delicate inner floral band, a thin red silk piping, and a wide golden-green geometric brocade outer border.
