This beautifully crafted textile panel, originating from China during the second quarter of the 20th century (1925–1950), is a fine example of late Republic-period silk art. The embroidery measures 7.5 inches by 11.5 inches (19 cm x 29 cm) and is presented within a decorative gilded frame measuring 17.5 inches by 13.5 inches (44 cm x 34 cm). The composition features a lush garden scene with vibrant blue peonies and various species of butterflies flitting amongst floral sprays on a muted lavender-purple damask ground.
The panel is executed with technical precision, utilizing silk satin stitch to create smooth, lustrous gradients in the flower petals and seed stitch to provide granular texture to the floral centers. Sophisticated metallic thread couching is used to highlight the intricate wing patterns of the butterflies, adding a regal shimmer to the organic forms. The artwork remains in very good condition.
