This powerful rectangular panel, originating from China during the mid-19th century (1840–1880), is an exceptional example of Qing Dynasty imperial-style embroidery. Measuring 26 inches by 31 inches (66 cm x 79 cm), the textile features a central four-clawed dragon rising from a turbulent sea of "lishui" (standing water) stripes and stylized waves. Two smaller dragons flank a central flaming pearl in the upper register, surrounded by auspicious clouds, bats, and floral symbols.
The panel demonstrates masterful technical variety, utilizing metallic thread couching to create the shimmering, armored scales of the dragons. The vibrant details are rendered in silk satin stitch for smooth color transitions and seed stitch (Peking knot) to add granular texture to the floral centers. The composition is framed by a sophisticated multi-layered border featuring phoenixes and floral scrolls on a dark ground. While the piece is in very good condition, slight fraying is visible along several sections of the outer border.
