This triangular uchishiki (Buddhist altar cloth), dating from the late Edo to mid-Meiji period (1850–1900), is a beautiful example of hand-woven tapestry. Measuring 33 inches by 21 inches (84 cm x 53 cm), the cloth is crafted from silk using the demanding tsume-tsuzure (fingernail-woven) technique. In this method, the weaver uses serrated fingernails to pull the weft threads into place, allowing for the creation of intricate, painterly designs within the weave itself.
