This triangular uchishiki (Buddhist altar cloth) from Japan dates to the Taisho period (1912–1926). Measuring 35 inches in width by 21 inches in height (89 cm x 53 cm), the textile is crafted from luxurious brocaded silk with a shimmering golden-tan ground.
The central motif depicts a tennyo (Buddhist celestial being or angel), rendered with remarkable detail. The figure is shown with large, expressive wings, holding a sacred lotus blossom and draped in flowing, ethereal scarves. Surrounding the celestial being are stylized, dark-bordered clouds and scattered Buddhist jewels or lotus buds. The piece is bordered at the top by a wide band of cream-colored silk damask featuring a subtle woven floral pattern. While the cloth is in very good condition, it does exhibit some historical staining consistent with its use in a temple setting.
