This boy’s miyamairi kimono was specifically designed for an infant’s celebratory first visit to a Shinto shrine. The garment is crafted from a formal black silk ground, which acts as a dark canvas for a powerful narrative landscape hand-dyed using the yuzen technique. The composition is dominated by a snow-capped Mount Fuji rising at the center, with a celestial dragon weaving through swirling grey clouds and crashing blue waves below.
The dragon, a symbol of wisdom and strength, is meticulously detailed with embroidery highlights and couching, where metallic or silk threads are laid on the surface and stitched down to create a raised, three-dimensional effect. Its body arcs across the back and sleeves, clutching a golden jewel which represents the pursuit of wisdom. The combination of the sacred mountain and the dragon reflects the parents' wishes for the child to possess great ambition and spiritual protection.
There's a full lining and light padding around the bottom hem. It measures 32 inches (81 cm) across and 38 inches (97 cm) tall.
