This silk miyamairi kimono presents an extraordinarily elaborate rendition of the takarabune (treasure ship) theme, featuring not one but two magnificent vessels amid a panorama of auspicious imagery. Silk-screening provides the foundational design, with gold foil outlining and metallic embroidery adding sumptuous dimensional highlights throughout.
The composition overflows with symbolic abundance. The treasure ships sail across dynamic blue and white waves, their holds laden with takara-mono (precious objects)—the magical implements associated with good fortune. Elegant tsuru (cranes) soar throughout the scene, their white forms appearing both in flight and skimming the water's surface, multiplying wishes for longevity. Minogame (long-tailed tortoises), another powerful longevity symbol, appear alongside the vessels.
Rising in the background, a mystical landscape of mountains and pagodas suggests Hōrai, the legendary isle of immortals where the treasure ships originate. Pine trees dot the middle ground, adding their symbolism of endurance. Individual treasure objects including drums, lucky mallets, and ceremonial implements float throughout, each carrying specific auspicious meanings.
The composition flows through carefully orchestrated zones: black silk at shoulders and hem frames a golden-cream middle passage where the primary imagery unfolds, transitioning through elaborate blue wave patterns rendered with white foam and gold accents.
Its measurements are 33 inches (84 cm) from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and 39 inches (99 cm) in height.
