This elegant gouache on paper is an original hand-painted artwork created for textile design in France, dating to the late 19th century (1880–1900). Measuring 21 inches by 14 inches (53 cm x 36 cm), this piece originates from the historic Bianchini Férier archive in Lyon, a firm celebrated for supplying avant-garde fabrics to legendary houses like Chanel, Vionnet, and Schiaparelli. This specific document was part of the prestigious collection auctioned at Christie’s London in 2001, highlighting its value as a record of European "Japonisme".
The composition showcases a delicate collection of Japanese-inspired motifs, including ripe fruits, seasonal flowers, and decorative roundels dispersed across a light cream ground. Central to the design are clusters of pomegranates and peaches rendered in soft gradients of rose, ochre, and moss green, alongside stylized blossoms and scrolling vine-work. Four geometric roundels anchor the corners, each featuring intricate floral or abstract patterns typical of Meiji-era decorative arts. While the artwork is in very good condition, it bears authentic signs of its studio life, including slight corner damage, a small tear at the bottom edge, and original production numbering.
