This extraordinary textile panel, originating from France between 1890 and 1905, is a stunning synthesis of European craftsmanship and East Asian aesthetic influence. Measuring 25 inches by 35 inches (64 cm x 89 cm), the piece is centered on a shimmering, pale gold silk ground. The composition features three pairs of highly stylized mythical birds, likely phoenixes, arranged in a formal, symmetrical row. Each pair is depicted in profile, facing one another with tails that interlace into elegant, scrolling terminal motifs.
The design is explicitly based on Japanese Art Nouveau artwork published during the same period, reflecting the profound "Japonisme" movement that swept through French decorative arts at the turn of the century. The embroidery is technically rare, utilizing a combination of gold and silver metal threads alongside vibrant silk embroidery to define the birds' plumage in shades of terracotta, soft pink, and lavender. The panel is framed by a gold-threaded border featuring a repeating pink floral and green leaf vine. Notably, the textile lacks a backing and includes four original 1-inch brass rings along the top, indicating it was intended to be displayed as a hanging on a rod. Despite very slight wear, it remains in excellent condition.
