This large-scale silk tapestry, originating from Belgium, France, or Italy during the second half of the 19th century (1850–1900), is a masterful Victorian reproduction of a medieval narrative. The composition features a repeating pattern of "wild men"—mythical figures common in European folklore—interacting with heraldic beasts including camels, unicorns, and spotted stags. Each figure is accompanied by flowing phylacteries (speech scrolls) containing Gothic-style script, all set against a dense, dark green "millefleur" background of clover-like foliage.
