This stunning French applique coverlet, dating to the second half of the 18th century (1750–1800), is a rare example of luxurious Rococo-era textile design. The body of the piece is crafted from a vibrant yellow slubbed silk, which serves as a luminous ground for the complex decorative elements. The primary ornamentation consists of silk ribbon woven in graduated shades of blue, applied in an intricate, symmetrical scrolling pattern that frames a central floral bouquet.
The detail work is exceptional, featuring delicate ribbon flowers with centers made of pink and yellow floss silk. Measuring 63 inches by 63 inches (160 cm x 160 cm), the coverlet is lined with period-appropriate old linen and includes hanging rings along the edges for display. While the textile remains in good, unfaded condition, it displays some historical markers including repairable splitting, a few areas of old "invisible" darning, and minor watermarks along the bottom edge.
