An early brocade with repeating architectural, foliage and people designs on a tightly woven wonderful light sky blue background. Two cloths have been sewn together to make a united whole. To better understand the craftmanship involved, see details of the front and back work in the detail images. Following is some relevant information written by the person who I purchased this textile from : " This piece comes from an estate in Newport, Rhode Island. This was purchased many years ago when one of the descendants of this estate traveled. He collected many things during his years of exporting and importing. This was one complete piece that was framed. It was a featured piece in one of the libraries of this estate. The estate was sold about 100 years after the piece arrived there in Rhode Island to one of the Universities in Rhode Island. This piece then settled in Boston, Massachusetts were the people decided that they would have this made into a large pillow for their main sitting room. Someone started the workmanship and for some reason the project was abandoned. This piece has been in a chest for the last 80 years in Boston, Massachusetts." Backed and fringed with a very fine but brittle cream silk cloth. Condition is good, with some soiling on the main, and much damage to the brittle silk backing and edging. 41" x 38"
