Item Details
Mid to late Meiji period (1880)
A soft silk maru obi featuring about 1000 tapestry-woven (tsume tzure) stripes of varying widths, ending with a scene of several chidori (plovers). This chidori section is wider on one side than the other, necessitating that the creator to cut short the adjacent stripes just above. Some gold metallic thread inserts. An extraordinary and unusual belt, perhaps created for a special formal function. It would have been an extremely time-consuming and expensive belt to create. Very good condition, with minor imperfections. 12in x 162in.
