Silk Tsutsugaki Futonji

Silk Tsutsugaki Futonji
Japan
Meiji era (1868-1911)
$1,500.00

Usually tsutsugaki futon covers are of cotton: this unusual example is of fine silk. Very good condition, with the original red border removed at some earlier point in time.. 53" x 61". The subject matter is a very traditional one: crane, pine and turtle to symbolize long life and good fortune. The four prominent family crests at each corner consisting of a square within a square represent an ancient tool, the nail extractor. This is one of the most popular motifs among the crests of high-ranking warrior families due to its martial implications, conveying a sense of great power from small origins.
